Evangelical “Others” in Ulster, 1859–1912: Social Profile, Unionist Politics, and “Fundamentalism”

Abstract This article considers the existence of a distinctive form fundamentalism in northern-Irish province Ulster. It does so by examining Protestant minorities that grew significantly decades after Ulster revival 1859. These evangelical others are important because their members were more likely to have fundamentalist tendencies than those who belonged main churches. The existing scholarship on Northern Ireland focuses Ian Paisley (1926–2014), was life-long adversary Irish republican separatism and self-identified fundamentalist. Yet, focus draws attention away from potential origin early twentieth century is associated with religious 1920s heresy trial “modernist” Presbyterian professor 1927. George Marsden's classic study defined as an American phenomenon, yet, developments mind, he noted “Ulster appears be exception.” 1 To what extent true? Was there constituency fundamentalists north century? If was, did social political circumstances region period produce variety fundamentalism?
